The Route
We took MN-23 west to Waite Park where we connected with I-94, traveled northwest on I-94 to Fargo, then took I-29 north to Grand Forks.
About the Day
The day was partly sunny and breezy with temperatures reaching the low 70's. Traffic was light and there was little highway construction.
We had a fun encounter and enjoyed the country scenes.
The town of Freeport is in the land of Garrison Keillor's mythical Lake Wobegon, just off I-94. We were wooed there by signs for Charlie's Cafe.
Charlie' Cafe is a fun, family restaurant located on Main Street across from the community park. They have generous street parking.
We didn't try everything on the menu, but Dick's Denver omelette was the best ever and Carol's french toast was really good. Their pastries looked so good that we were given permission to order pie with breakfast (we didn't).
This couple sat across from us and highly recommended having Charlie's pie with breakfast. |
Fields in northwestern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota look a lot like Iowa.

Hello North Dakota |
North Dakota fields |
There seem to be a lot of unpaved country roads in North Dakota |
The Campground
Grand Forks Campground is nice enough, but it's dated and located in a bit of a dust bowl. The access road from I-94 is unpaved and very dusty. The staff is very nice, the sites are level and the utilities work fine.
Site F-2 |
It's a convenient stop where there are few options. |
Oh, those dusty roads! |
Farm fields and equipment surround the campground. |
What's Next?
We've made it to the northernmost US route that will take us west into Montana. This part of US-2 is new to us. We expect services to be more limited than what we've come to expect along interstate highways ... just part of the adventure.
