Day 17 – Whitehorse, YT (Day 2)

Having daylight until midnight has interesting effects ... we stay up later and wake up later. As a result, we didn’t head out to explore Whitehorse until 10:30am.

About the Day
The day was mostly cloudy. The temperature reached 60°F. The drive to Whitehorse city center took about 10 minutes.

Our first stop was at Tim Horton’s where we published yesterday’s blog post and had breakfast. Then we visited the Yukon Visitor Information Centre, the Log Skyscraper, the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site, the Old Log Church and the MacBride Museum of Yukon History.

Log Skyscrapers …
This unique pair of log buildings dates to the boom years of Alaska Highway construction.
We’re seeing the Yukon’s first high-rise.

S.S. Klondike …
Originally launched in 1937, one of the largest sternwheelers to travel the Yukon River has been restored and now rests at the southern entrance to the city. This 240 foot boat could carry 300 tons of cargo with a draft of only 40”.

Old Log Church …
The original Anglican Church in Whitehorse now houses a museum describing the introduction and spread of Christianity in the Yukon.
We heard why he ate his boots.

MacBride Museum …
This museum houses many artifacts and photographs from the gold rush era, an excellent wildlife display, Sam McGee’s log cabin, Whitehorse’s first telegraph office, and many other impressive displays.

We found this to be an outstanding museum. Items were in excellent condition and very well marked.

We parked in front of the RCMP office and couldn’t ignore the memory of special Mounties like Sergeant Preston and King …

Other Stuff
We seem to meet interesting people every day. Today was no exception. Maya Rosenberg took our order at Tim Horton’s. She was delightful. We joked about being foreigners and she let us know that she, too, was a foreigner. She came from Israel and has been in Whitehorse for two years. We exchanged contact information.

Highway construction leaves a mark on every vehicle traveling the Alcan. There’s no point in getting a wash now.
Our front (wing) windows were washed for effect.

Tomorrow
We’ll continue heading northwest and will be staying in White River, YT.
