Day 31 – Kenai, AK to Homer, AK

So, why are we going to Homer? Two reasons:
  • Lots of folks have said we should.
  • It feels like we’re going to the end of the road because we can’t go further south on the Kenai Peninsula unless we fly or float.

The Route
The drive to Homer was 83 easy miles. We left Kenai on Bridge Access Road, connected with Kalifornsky Beach Road and then Sterling Highway which took us directly to our campground.

About the Day
It was very pleasant again… mostly sunny, light breeze, low-60s.

Along the Way
Checking out

We explored Old Town Kenai and visited the Kenai Visitor and Cultural Center before leaving town ...
St. Nicholas Memorial Chapel
Russian Orthodox Church

Rectory
Replica of Historic Fort Kenay (1869)
Moose Range Headquarters
Mushing Terms from the Info Center

Sterling Highway …
The highway followed Cook Inlet to Anchor Point

Entering Homer …
Viewpoint has a nice greeting
Eagle's nest on a hillside overlooking the viewpoint

Touring Homer …
Homer 4.5 Mile Spit, Airport and
Beluga Lake (float plane base)
Spit Seafarers Memorial
Spit Marina
This single lane, gravel road is the entrance to
All Saints of America Orthodox Church ...
we found it curious.
The church sits at the end of a steep, rutted road.

The Campground
We’re in Oceanview RV Park in Homer. It’s a dandy with terraced sites leading down to Kachemak Bay. Our tight back-in site was a challenge, but our front-row view of the bay made it worth the effort.

Tomorrow
We’re going to retrace much of the road traveled in the past two days to get to Seward.
