Day 36 – Valdez, AK (Day 3)

We took a closer look at Valdez.

The Route
We drove round Valdez and went to the Old Valdez site.

About the Day
It rained most of the night. The morning was overcast, but brighter than yesterday. The sun peeked through some late afternoon showers.

Summer Solstice occurred at 2:34pm.

Along the Way
Our Columbus friends began their return trip home this morning. We got to wish them well last night.
Dinner with John & Rose Pearson

We extended our stay one more day and signed up for a glacier and wildlife cruise.

Valdez Harbor …
Much of the city activity occurs along the harbor.

Valdez Museum & Historical Archive …
This museum is a treasure. The displays are pristine and creative. We learned how the city has been continually reshaped by nature and human greed.

Remembering Old Valdez Exhibit …
A 1:20 scale replica of Old Valdez is the centerpiece of this exhibit. It’s divided into 11 pods so visitors can “walk through the town” as it was before the earthquake. It took 2½ years to construct. It was interesting, but a bit confusing.

Old Valdez Site …
Valdez was deemed uninhabitable and rebuilt on a new location after the 1964 earthquake. Abandoned buildings in the old location were razed; only overgrown tidal flats remain. The only things that can be easily seen are dock pilings, the foundation of the post office and gravel roads.

it was destroyed in 1964.

Trailer Tidbits
We’ve towed the Airstream over 5,500 miles on some pretty rough roads and only popped 1 rivet. It got replaced today.

Rain exposed a small leak in the rear Fantastic Fan frame (over the bed) during the travel from Charlie Lake to Ft. Nelson, BC. It’ll be sealed with plastic and duct tape until we get home.

There’s a seam crack in the fresh water tank causing a slow leak. It’s an inconvenience that can be repaired later.

Tomorrow
We’re taking a Stan Stephens Columbia Glacier Cruise.
