This
post describes what we did today. It excludes most Denali park details. Our take
on the Denali experience will be described in a single post after we leave
here.
The Route
We drove about 4 miles north on AK-3 to Healy for breakfast and then back
south to the park.
About the Day
We awoke to low clouds and a light drizzle. Sun and clear skies appeared by mid-morning and gave way to clouds and showers many times through the day. The temperature
made it to the mid-60s.
The campground office staff recommended Rose’s Café for breakfast and we gave it a try. The breakfasts were
very good.

The parking lot was full |
This restaurant stop came with an unexpected treat. John and Rose
Pearson (friends from Columbus) walked in as we were getting ready to leave. They were arriving in the
area from Fairbanks and decided to stop for brunch at Rose’s namesake
restaurant. We had a fun visit before leaving them to head for the park.
At the park …
We went to the Visitor Information Center to investigate options
for seeing the park.
Ranger Dawn Conroy provided us with exceptional customer service. She explained the pros and cons of park travel with skill and humor. We chose to try self-guided
travel first.
Thank you Ranger Conroy |
We watched the park film “The Heartbeats of Denali”. It showed a
beautiful story of Denali’s seasons. The photography was outstanding.
The only bear we’ll approach |
Flowers decorate the grounds |
We drove the Park Road to Mile 14.7 … as far as we could go on our
own.
At Glitter Gulch …
We shopped in the tourist area outside the park (called “Glitter
Gulch” by the locals) and had an early dinner there.
At the park again …
We went back to the park at 8:30pm to drive the Park Road again.
Tomorrow
We hope to see the sled dog demonstration and explore more of the
park.
