We
opted for a short driving day and are glad we did. Road construction turned a
250 mile trip into a tiring 5½ hour travel day. Trailer contents got jostled a
bit.
The Route
We left Whitehorse on the Alaska
Highway (YT-1) and followed it for 250 miles to White River near Beaver
Creek. We passed the Klondike Highway
turnoff to Dawson City shortly after leaving Whitehorse and the Haines Highway turnoff to Haines at
Haines Junction.
About the Day
The temperature stayed in the mid to high 50’s and the sky was
partly sunny. It started raining lightly when we arrived at the campground.
We stopped at the Otter Falls Cutoff truck stop for breakfast. It
was quite good and reasonably priced.
OK, let’s get back on the road |
Continuous mountain views drew us onward.
Pretty blue flowers lined the highway.
Kulane Lake provided a nice change of
pace.
We followed this Airstream Limited from Texas along the lake shore. |
The highway kept our attention, too.
Orange cones and flags mark frost heaves and rough spots. |
There were many sections with loose gravel. It’s slow going. |
And some long stretches being resurfaced |
Other Stuff
Something we’ve noticed and forgot to mention … there’s no loose trash
along the Alaska Highway. There are many roadside trash receptacles.
We encountered a lot more frost heaves today than on any other
day.
There are many abandoned road houses, campgrounds and gas stations
along the way in BC and YT. You really need to keep an eye on your gas gauge.
The Campground
We’re staying at Discovery
Yukon Lodgings. It’s a very nice campground beside the Alaska Highway in
the wilderness. The grounds and facilities are nicely kept and it has a grass
runway.
Tomorrow
We’re near the border. We’ll cross into the US early tomorrow and plan
to stop in Tok to restock and get organized for Alaska exploration.
