This
is day two of our return to the U.S.
The
Route
This was another all Alaska Highway driving day … 256 miles worth. We
passed Haines Junction and Whitehorse. There was some construction (with
attendant loose gravel, dust and a pilot car), but nowhere near what we saw
yesterday. We enjoyed long stretches of pretty smooth travel.
About the Day
It was mostly sunny with a brisk breeze and a high of 70°.
Along the Way
Cottonwood scenes …
Inviting lakefront sites |
That's dust blowing across Kluane Lake |
Just about ready to head out |
Unassuming entrance hides a gem |
Around Kluane Lake …
An abandoned cabin sparks imagination |
Valley winds stir dust across Kluane Lake |
On Down the Road …
These flowers line the highway all the way. |
It’s a long, winding road. |
We still see snow-capped mountains. |

We played in the highway mud today. |
Travel Tidbits
Destruction Bay’s name is derived from the wind blowing down
structures built by the military during highway construction in 1942-43.
We’ve traveled the full length of the Alcan Highway (from Dawson
Creek, BC to Delta Junction, AK). There are those who make a case for returning
a different way. So far, our return on the same route looks quite different.
Guess it’s just a matter of how you look at it.
The Campground
We’re staying at Yukon
Lakeshore RV Park on the shores of Teslin Lake. It’s a busy complex that also
offers a motel, a restaurant, gas, a post office and a wildlife gallery. Sites
have 20 or 30 amp electric service and water. It’s not fancy, but it’s very convenient.
The wildlife gallery displays are outstanding!
Tomorrow
We’ll continue south on the Alaska Highway to the Watson Lake area.
