We
traveled the most spectacular scenic highway we can remember today.
The Route
The journey from Anchorage to Kenai covered 181 miles; all but the
last 10 miles were on AK-1. The 10 miles from Soldotna to Kenai were on Kalifornsky
Beach Road and a few local streets.
About the Day
It was very pleasant … mostly sunny, light breeze, high-60s.
Along the Way
An Anchorage Treat …
Carol thought we should try again to see Denali from a downtown
viewpoint. We saw it this morning! That’s right; we can now certify there really
is a Denali mountain.

National Forest Scenic Byway …
Just south of Anchorage, Seward Highway hugs the shorelines of
Turnagain Arm (a narrow branch of Cook Inlet) as part of the National Forest
Scenic Byway. It’s the most beautiful stretch of highway we’ve seen.

Kenai Peninsula …
The Chigmit mountains of the Aleutian Range come into view as we
turn west near Cooper Landing. Mt. Redoubt is the most prominent at 10,197 ft.

The Campground
We’re staying at the Beluga
Lookout RV Park near old town Kenai. It’s located on a bluff overlooking Cook
Inlet and the Kenai River.

Tomorrow
We’re continuing further south on the peninsula to Homer.

ReplyDeleteOn the way to Homer is a state park (I believe) called Deep Creek. If you have a chance, drive down into it and park at the end on the beach - rocks really. We saw more bald eagles there than anywhere else, probably 35 or 40. Lots of fledglings in the group.
