June
26th, posted June 27th.
We
turned right and started heading toward Portland today.
The
Route
We drove east on the Alcan about a quarter mile, turned right onto
the Cassiar Highway (a.k.a. Stewart-Cassiar Highway and BC-37) and followed it
199 miles to Iskut.
The 450 mile Cassiar Highway connects Yellowhead Highway in BC
with the Alaska Highway in YT.
About the Day
It started out overcast with a light rain. The day brightened. There
were a few brief showers. We had clear skies by late afternoon. The temperature
only made it to the low 60’s.
Along the Way
BC is our last province before returning to the U.S. |
The highway …
This was the most isolated travel experience of the trip. Traffic
was extremely light, services were distant and there was little sign of life. The
terrain was awesome.
This is the Cassiar Highway |
It’s a narrow winding road with some straight sections, hilly with grades to 10%, no center-line, and no shoulders. |
There were some rough spots |
Jade City …
The Cassiar Mountain range supplies 92% of the world’s jade. Named
for the extensive jade deposits found nearby, Jade City gives visitors a view
from prospecting jade to mining it. Carol got to experience buying some of it.
Some sights …
A fox near Nugget City, YT |
Evidence of 2010 and 2012 wildfires started by lightning. |
Peaceful Dease Lake |
Tanzilla River was wide and flowing full |
Connections
People connections continue to happen in the most unexpected
places. Charlie Elizabeth was performing traffic control at a highway
construction stop. She approached and told us we might have a 10 to 15 minute
wait. We asked about her job and a conversation was born. We chatted for about
10 minutes.
Charlie does a good job of stopping traffic. |
The Campground
We’re at Mountain Shadow RV
Park just off BC-37, between Mount
Edziza Park and Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness
Park. It’s one of the most peaceful, beautiful settings we’ve experienced.

Tomorrow
We’re continuing on BC-37 to Hazelton.
