Day 38 – Valdez, AK to Tok, AK (Again)

Why are we in Tok again? Because Tok is the jumping-off point for all highway traffic entering and departing Alaska ... and we're departing.

The Route
We drove north from Valdez on Richardson Highway (AK-4) to the Tok Cut-off Highway (AK-1) just north of Glennallen and took it to Tok. It was a 257 mile trip.

Travel note: Tok Cut-off Highway is a pretty rough drive in spots. There are many loose gravel sections. The damaged road warnings should be taken seriously as the surface dips and heaves significantly.

About the Day
It was mostly sunny with a high near 70°.

Along the Way
Valdez ins and outs …
Entering Keystone Canyon
Leaving Keystone Canyon
Summit at Thompson Pass
Descending Thompson Pass
Summit road developed during the 1898 gold rush
The Trans-Alaska Pipeline makes its way to Valdez

A nice day all around …
Forward & backward

Copper Center …
We stopped at Copper Center for lunch. This quaint village has many surprises. And there's salmon fishing going on just a short walk down the road.
Unassuming, but very nice.
Small towns are proud of their history, too.
You can get a fill-up, too.
Whisker Fun
5 weeks and 3 days. This is as far as it goes.

The Campground
We’re staying at Tok RV Village. We stayed here when we arrived in Alaska 19 days ago. They said they’d see us again and, sure enough, they did.

Tomorrow
We’ll cross into Canada and the Yukon Territory.
