This wasn’t a good day for seeing Denali, but it was a good day for travel to Anchorage.
The Route
We traveled 249 miles by taking AK-3 south from Denali Park to
AK-1 just east of Wasilla, then AK-1 south to Anchorage. There was little highway
construction. The roads were in good condition with a few rough spots ... in excellent
condition compared to the Alcan.
About the Day
Unlike yesterday, the day began with low clouds and a brisk breeze.
Rain showers came and went until late afternoon. The temperature dipped to the
mid-40s. The sun showed up in the early afternoon and played hide and seek with us the rest of the day.
Along the Way
Mountains followed us all the way |
Denali viewing …
We kept looking for a glimpse of Denali through low clouds and showers. We stopped near Cantwell (milepost 210), at Denali Viewpoint North
(milepost 163) and at Denali Viewpoint South (milepost 135). No luck.
The day brightened, but not enough |
Our best Denali picture came from Viewpoint South |
The normally beautiful drive through Broad Pass (a.k.a. Caribou
Pass) was shrouded by low clouds.
Rain created an ominous scene some of the way.
Wasilla …
We tried to find Sarah Palin’s home when we reached
Wasilla. Her address (1140 W. Parks Highway) was along our route. It was located in a forested area off the highway that blocked our vision. We couldn’t see Russia from there either.
Leaving Wasilla |

Sightings
This moose crossed the highway ahead of us |
The Campground
We’re staying at the Golden
Nugget RV Park in Anchorage. It’s a fairly standard city RV park. There’s
nothing scenic about it. The rain stopped just before we needed
to unhitch and set-up the trailer.
There’s quite an Airstream presence here tonight. There are 4 within sight of our trailer. One
belongs to our Columbus friends, John and Rose Pearson. Cool, huh?
Tomorrow
We have no formal plans beyond figuring out how to explore the
area.
