Day 39 – Tok, AK to Destruction Bay, YT

We started late today. We’re not sure if it was because we were tired or because we weren’t ready to leave Alaska.

The Route
We got on the Alaska Highway in Tok and drove 240 difficult miles. There was lots of highway construction along the way, resulting in more than 100 km of loose gravel, dust and pilot cars. Add many warnings for heaves, dips and broken road surfaces and you get a day of driving well below posted speed limits. There were many good sections, but it’s hard to remember them.

About the Day
It was mostly sunny with a high of 72°.

Along the Way
We put off the inevitable by driving a few 100 yards down the highway and stopping at Fast Eddy’s Restaurant for a nice breakfast and conversation with some locals.

At the border …
The wait was short and we scooted right through.

Along the Alcan …
The terrain is beautiful, but the highway is a challenge in places.
We saw a lot of this today.
We shot our first grizzly today
 and it didn't bother him/her a bit.
A little closer look.

Travel Tidbits
We traveled 2,569 miles in Alaska and only saw a speck of it.

The Campground
We’re staying at Cottonwood RV Park, 16 miles south of Destruction Bay on Kluane Lake. The park is in a remote area just off the Alaska Highway. It’s attractive and very well maintained.

Three generators provide park power. They offer water and 15 amp service at the sites and a dump station. There’s no Verizon coverage here and the park’s internet hotspot is pretty feeble. That said; it’s a delightful place to stop.
